ImSafe check-in with the I'm Safe and I'm Here buttons

How it works

  1. 1

Open a group and tap Check-In.

  2. 2

Tap I'm Here to share where you are, or I'm Safe to say you're OK without your location.

  3. 3

Everyone in that group is told straight away.

Two ways to check in

I'm Here shares where you are: an approximate place name, the time, your phone's battery level and whether you're on the move.

I'm Safe sends the message without any location. It's for the times you want people to know you're fine but not where you are.

Only the group you choose

A check-in goes only to the group you checked in with. If you're in a family group and a friends group, checking in with one tells the other nothing.

Want someone else to check in? Send a nudge

A nudge asks a person to check in. It doesn't ask for their location, so it's the gentle option when you only want to hear they're OK.

No tracking in between

ImSafe doesn't share your location between check-ins, in the background or otherwise. It keeps only the last location you shared with each group, not a history of where you've been.

When people use it

Getting home after a night out. Arriving after a long drive or a flight. Finishing a late shift, a run or a first date. Settling into a new city for university. These are the moments when someone is waiting to hear you're OK, and a check-in tells them in one tap instead of a string of texts.

It works the other way too. Parents can see their teenager got to school or practice. Adult children can hear from an older parent who lives alone. Friends travelling separately can let each other know they've arrived.

Why check in instead of being tracked

Always-on location apps answer the question "where are you?" every second of the day, whether anyone needs to know or not. Most of the time, the people who care about you only want to know one thing: that you're OK.

A check-in answers that question and nothing more. You decide when to send it and whether your location goes with it. Nobody gets a live dot following you around, and nothing is recorded between check-ins. Many people find that's easier to agree to, especially teenagers, partners and grown-up children who don't want to be watched all the time.

What your group sees

Each check-in shows up in the group's activity and as a notification on everyone's phone. If you tapped I'm Here, your place appears on the group map with the time you checked in, so people can see how recent it is. If you tapped I'm Safe, they see that you're OK and nothing about where you are.

Common questions

Does a check-in share my exact address?

No. I'm Here shares an approximate place name with your position on the group map. I'm Safe shares no location at all.

Can I check in with more than one group?

Each check-in goes to one group, the one you open. To tell a second group, open it and check in there too. This keeps your family and your friends separate.

Do I have to check in at set times?

No. There are no schedules or reminders to keep up with. You check in whenever you want people to know you're OK, and anyone in your group can send you a nudge if they'd like to hear from you.

What if I forget to check in?

Someone in your group can send a nudge, which asks you to check in without asking for your location. If they need to know where you are, they can send a location check instead, and you'll be told and given time to answer first.
